We provide music information services to developers and partners through our large data mining and machine listening platform that both listens to and reads about the entire world of online music. Our current development projects involve large scale internet data mining, machine learning, DSP optimization, and music and video analysis and synthesis.

Engineering Positions

Audio DSP / MIR Engineer

We are looking for a Signal Processing and Music Information Retrieval engineer to improve our music analysis and synthesis algorithms. You'd be in charge of evaluating and improving the current audio and music algorithms: feature extraction (key, time signature, beat, etc), and synthesis (beat-matching, thumbnailing, time-stretching, etc) as well as designing new ones. The ideal candidate has experience with music text, and machine learning techniques (clustering, classification, regression, etc). Please send examples of projects you have worked on.

Responsibilities:

  • Evaluate and improve current music feature extraction
  • Quick prototyping

The Ideal Candidate:

  • Experienced in audio / music analysis and synthesis algorithms
  • Actually understands the difference between audio and music
  • Good knowledge of the Music Information Retrieval literature
  • Proficiency in Matlab, Python, C/C++ (rather than assembly and embedded DSP)

Software Architect

We are looking for an experienced software architect who can design and grow our audio analysis and synthesis platform. You would be working with our DSP researchers and engineers to build cutting-edge music tools that work on mobile devices, the desktop, and the web. The ideal candidate has built large cross-platform music software, is proficient with real-time audio, math optimization, and is familiar with DSP algorithms. For this position, please send examples of software engineering projects you have worked on.

Responsibilities:

  • Architect of audio and music analysis and synthesis platform
  • Write / rewrite code, integrating, optimizing, improving existing algorithms
  • Design and direct software portability, efficiency, and quality evaluation

Student Internship - Junior Engineer

The Echo Nest is looking for undergraduate or graduate computer science students who love Python and music to help build on our one-of- a-kind music intelligence platform. The perfect candidate is more than passionate about music, is a solid developer, and can learn new things quickly. The internship is located in our office in Davis Square.

Responsibilities:

  • Support Python development efforts around a code base that processes large amounts of music-oriented text and audio data
  • Support of automated testing, scripting and basic QA for web crawling and audio analysis
  • Learn new technologies quickly

The Ideal Candidate:

  • Familiar with development and scripting work in Python
  • Demonstrated top academic achievement in college-level Computer Science coursework

Technical Operations Manager

The Technical Operations manager will support all engineering groups at The Echo Nest, ensuring excellent systems uptime, response time and overall customer satisfaction. The ideal candidate has a passion for online music and over 4 years of experience managing engineering operations for enterprise-level application servers in a data-intensive startup environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for all server operations and planning, with a focus on high availability based on simplicity, resiliency and manageability.
  • Develop, implement and administer all processes and procedures to ensure the reliability, recoverability, and optimum performance of all systems.
  • Manage performance, availability and operational data collection for analysis of systems capacity requirements.
  • Establish both a troubleshooting methodology and accurate root-cause analysis strategy to resolve problems that may have multiple system dependencies.
  • Define 24x7 enterprise monitoring metrics and response criteria. Collaborate with the systems management team to deploy and maintain the required tools.
  • Very light internal office IT operations -- internet connectivity, hardware provisioning

The Ideal Candidate:

  • Must-Haves:
  • Strong experience with Linux - shell scripting, regular expressions, cron, ssh, rsync
  • Experience with virtualized hosts -- EC2, Xen, VMWare, etc
  • Experience with one or more of: LAMP, Django, Solr, Jetty
  • Internet-level network diagnostics: latency, bandwidth & throughput
  • Server replication, hot spare building, backup management
  • Understand and can act on hardware metrics: load, memory, disk IO, network IO, caches

VP of Product

The VP of Product will work closely with the CEO and engineering team, leading product management, strategy and delivery, with accountability for key growth metrics. This product leader will be obsessed with digital music and will have a proven track record of successfully aligning technology platforms with market needs in a startup environment. The ideal candidate is keenly product-focused with a solid understanding of online music, analytics web services and information retrieval. Though this position will work closely with development teams in product development, this is not a hands-on engineering role.
